Retail investors invested Rs 1.41 lakh crore last year

The stock markets of the country and the world have always been dominated by institutional investors. In the Indian stock market, retail investors have outperformed institutional investors in terms of purchases.

According to figures released by the NSE, last year, in 2021, the Indian stock market saw a retail investment of Rs 224 lakh crore. Which is almost double that of institutional investors.

Retail investors bought $ 19 billion (Rs 1.41 lakh crore) in the capital market in 2021, compared to only $ 7 billion for institutional investors. In 2021, retail investors have invested $ 12 billion (Rs 90,000 crore) in the stock market.

The NSE defines retail investors as individual investors, NRIs, sole proprietors and HOFs. It is noteworthy that the number of demat accounts in the country is constantly increasing. CDSL and NSDL had 8.1 crore demat accounts in January, which doubled to 3.6 crore in March 2019.
